While reading chapter 11, the first sentence that caught my attention is when Filak explains what Public Relations is, “PR practitioners communicate valuable and engaging information from an organization, company or group to a target audience in a clear and coherent manner.” This is important to know because Public Relations is such a large field and, to me, it was kind of confusing knowing what Public Relations is and what their job is. The next thing I found interesting to better understand Public Relations are the five terms Filak talks about. The first term Filak talks about is being deliberate in Public Relations. Public Relation professionals have to be intentional about what the message is and how they should get the message across to the target audience. This is important because if people don’t know who a person is or any facts, then they will not understand the message being sent. “Some practitioners attempt to gain understanding as they connect an unknown political candidate or unfamiliar topic with people who need to know this person or idea,” Filak said. The second term Filak talks about is how Public Relation professionals have to be prepared. Being prepared for someone to give a speech or being prepared for a news conference is essential, because if the person isn’t prepared, then they will not have a good story and the message to the target audience will not be clear. The third term Filak talks about is being well-performed. Filak talks about how executing is really one of the only things that matters while being judged by other people. To me this is important because if you don’t look like you know what you are doing, then you probably don’t. The fifth term Filak talks about is being mutually beneficial. I think this is one of the more important terms because, like Filak said, “PR professionals want to foster a strong, long-term relationship between their clients and the public, so all communication must benefit both groups.” The last term Filak talks about is responsive. It is important for the audience to have a positive response to what the audience received. This chapter helped me understand more of what Public Relations is and gave me an understanding of how PR professionals work.
