My name is Nate Roys, and I am currently a junior Sports Communications major at Piedmont College. I have been interested in sports for as long as I can remember. I was born and raised in Gainesville, Ga. I started playing basketball and baseball
in elementary school, but decided in middle school that I wanted to pursue football, a sport that I had always loved to spectate but never had the opportunity to play. Playing for the first time in 9th grade, I instantly fell in love with the game. I was able to play underneath some great coaches and alongside outstanding players, including current Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. I have football to thank for many of the close friends that I have made, and for the eight screws and a plate in my left leg.
I’m the sports editor our school newspaper here at Piedmont, so if you ever want to write for the sports section of The Roar, we can hook you up for sure! In the spring I was able to take our sportscasting class here at Piedmont. I genuinely thought that I would hate doing play-by-play of the basketball and baseball games, but it turned out to be one of my favorite classes that I’ve taken here at Piedmont.
I have been a devout Florida Gator fan for the last 14 years. There have been some good and bad times, but it has been more of the latter lately. I am a huge Atlanta sports fan as well. As tough and heartbreaking as it is at times, I support the Falcons, Hawks, Braves and Atlanta United. Hockey is my favorite sport to watch in person, and I am a huge Tampa Bay Lightning fan.
One of my best memories concerning sports came this year. I’ve always dreamed of going to a game at Wrigley Field, and that dream was made a reality this past summer. I’ve been to many Braves, and even some Tampa Bay Rays games over the years, but nothing quite compared to watching the Cubs play in Chicago. The fans’ passion for the team and game are indescribable. Oh, and I guess the authentic Chicago deep dish pizza was pretty good too.
This fall I have an internship with Jacobs Media in Gainesville, Ga., helping out with Friday night high school football broadcasts. I keep stats for the play-by-play and color commentators, and also write a game story for accesswdun.com. Our first game of the season was this past Friday and it was an awesome experience. Since we do not have a football team here at Piedmont, it’s great to get a chance to cover one of my favorite sports outside of the school. If you’d like to read my first write-up about the Chestatee vs. North Hall game, here’s the link: http://accesswdun.com/article/2018/8/703891/north-hall-avenges-defeat-to-chestatee-with-exclamation-point.
Some of my favorite memories involve sports, and I hope that I can bring my passion for sports to other people.
